Waltham Symphony Orchestra
A Legacy of Musical Excellence in the Greater Boston Area
For decades, the Waltham Symphony Orchestra brought world-class symphonic music to communities across Greater Boston — nurturing talent, inspiring audiences, and weaving the arts into the fabric of everyday life.
Our Mission
Music as a Public Good
The WSO was founded on the conviction that symphonic music belongs to everyone. Serving the Greater Boston metropolitan area, the orchestra pursued a dual mandate: to perform at the highest artistic level, and to make that artistry accessible — free of charge or at nominal cost — to the broadest possible audience.
The orchestra believed deeply that exposure to live orchestral music enriches communities, bridges cultural divides, and nurtures the next generation of musicians and music lovers. Every season was shaped by this mission: from free summer concerts on the town common to deeply discounted family matinees, the WSO made accessibility a point of artistic pride.
Beyond performance, the organization invested in educational programming, community partnerships, and mentorship initiatives that extended the reach of symphonic music far beyond the concert hall.
Our History
Decades of Musical Stewardship
The Waltham Symphony Orchestra was founded by Patrick Botti, whose long-standing presence in Waltham’s musical and civic life helped bring the ensemble into being. As a well-known conductor, educator, and community figure, he envisioned a local symphony that would serve the city, its musicians, and its audiences. The orchestra grew directly from that vision and from his leadership.

The Orchestra
A Full Symphonic Ensemble
The Waltham Symphony Orchestra was a full-sized symphonic ensemble comprising the standard orchestral complement of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Musicians ranged from seasoned professionals to highly accomplished community performers, united by a commitment to artistic excellence and public service.
The orchestra performed a broad repertoire spanning the Baroque era through the twentieth century, with particular focus on the core symphonic canon — Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Stravinsky, Ravel among the most frequently programmed composers — alongside works by American composers and contemporary voices.
Performances took place primarily at venues in Waltham and the surrounding Greater Boston area, with occasional appearances at regional festivals and special events.
Community Outreach
Bringing Music to Every Corner of Greater Boston
School Visits & Classroom Programs
WSO musicians and teaching artists brought live orchestral music directly into public school classrooms, offering age-appropriate demonstrations, instrument introductions, and pre-concert educational materials tied to the season's repertoire.
Free Community Concerts
Each season included multiple free or deeply subsidized public concerts — held outdoors on town commons, in community centers, and at public libraries — ensuring that financial barriers never stood between a neighbor and a live symphonic experience.
Family & Youth Programming
Family concerts, instrument petting zoos, and youth-focused programming demystified the concert hall experience for children and parents alike, building lifelong audiences and fostering a new generation of music lovers across the region.
Apprenticeship Program
Cultivating the Next Generation of Orchestra Musicians
The WSO Apprenticeship Program was one of the organization's most enduring and impactful contributions to the regional music community. Designed for advanced student musicians and emerging professionals, the program placed apprentices directly within the performing ensemble — giving them the experience of rehearsing and performing full symphonic repertoire alongside veteran players.
Apprentices participated in regular rehearsals, received mentorship from section leaders, attended professional development sessions, and performed in full subscription concerts. The program bridged the critical gap between conservatory training and professional orchestral employment — a gap that derails many otherwise talented careers.
Over the years, alumni of the apprenticeship program went on to perform with professional orchestras across the country, crediting the WSO with providing the foundational ensemble experience that launched their careers.
Collaborations
Partnerships That Amplified the Art
Choral Partnerships
The WSO regularly collaborated with regional choral societies and ensembles, producing joint performances of major choral-orchestral works — including oratorios, requiems, and seasonal celebrations — that brought together dozens of additional community musicians.
Guest Soloists
Each season featured accomplished guest soloists — instrumentalists and vocalists at the professional and emerging-professional level — performing with the full orchestra. These collaborations enriched the programming and exposed audiences to a wide range of musical voices.
Dance & Interdisciplinary Arts
Select seasons included collaborative performances with dance companies and visual artists, exploring the intersection of symphonic music with movement and visual storytelling. These productions expanded the definition of what an orchestra concert could be.
Academic & Conservatory Partnerships
Formal and informal relationships with regional music schools and conservatories created a pipeline of talent into the apprenticeship program and facilitated joint educational events, masterclasses, and lecture-recitals.
Community Support
Sustained by the Community It Served
The WSO was made possible by the generosity of its community — through ticket purchases, organizational memberships, corporate sponsorships, and individual philanthropy. Every contribution, large or small, directly funded the music, the education programs, and the outreach that defined the orchestra's mission.
The orchestra maintained a firm belief that ticket prices should never be the primary barrier to attendance. Subscriber and donor support made it possible to offer substantial numbers of complimentary and reduced-price tickets each season, particularly for students, seniors, and families.
Corporate and foundation support enabled the outreach and education programs that extended the orchestra's reach into schools and community spaces. The WSO was proud to be an organization where community investment translated directly into community benefit — visible, audible, and lasting.
